The United Nations Development Programme’s mandate is to end poverty, build democratic governance, rule of law, and inclusive institutions. UNDP advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources that help them build a better life for their people.

UNDP's work is concentrated in three focus areas: sustainable development; democratic governance and peacebuilding; and climate and disaster resilience. In the context of urban development, UNDP remains committed to the aligned implementation of the NDCs, the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda. The organization is supporting cities in the following areas:

  • COVID-19 recovery, including business continuity measures, reopening public spaces, engaging communities to build their resilience to shocks, and collecting real-time data on the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic, with particular attention to residents of informal settlements and slums.

  • Strategic initiatives focused on building local capacities in cities; advancing city competitiveness, which includes restoring livelihoods and improving worker protections; adaptive and innovative municipal financing; and building urban climate resilience.
